Recycling Bins Delivering

On Thursday October 6th the IGCA team at the ABC, went out on a mission to promote recycling. The goal was to place recycling bins on all the classrooms within the primary area of school as the secondary section has had for two years. We approached this in a very organized manner. We divided ourselves into teams of 4 or 5 members of the IGCA team and each team was given about 4 or 5 bins to place in classrooms. Each IGCA leader was appointed to a team and to the classrooms correspondent to that team. We carried this out effectively and each class that didn’t have a recycling paper bin obtained one.

Recycling month activities

November in the ABC was recycling month, given the fact that November 21st is the international day of recycling. Given this, the IGCA team had programmed three activities in order to support this. The three activities were the Recycling competition, the trashion show and the sculpture competition. These three competitions will be explained further on in this post:

The recycling competition

This was the main body of the recycling campaign at the ABC. It involved the students competing in each of their tutor groups by bringing in recycling materials and accumulating points for their group. The ultimate prize was a pizza lunch for their tutor group. The IGCA team was in charge of counting and recording the points for each classroom and they went as follows, cans counted for 2 credits glass bottles also counted for 2 credits, 1 cm of paper counted for 1 credit and plastic bottles counted for 1 credit. The competition was taken very seriously by many of the secondary students and they were determined to win the pizza lunch. Although there was only 1 victor class the overall population appeared very enthusiastic about the competition. Even though the competition ended it can be seen through the school that many students embraced the habit of recycling in their lives which was the ultimate purpose of the competition.

Trashion show

Students were encouraged to design their own outfits made of recycled materials. These were to be displayed down a runway in the “Trashion show”. They could create coats, dresses, bags, accessories, shoes, etc.

Sculpture competition

Students were to create a sculpture out of recycled materials; they could work in groups or pairs. After a week of displaying the sculptures in the LRC, a survey would be passed to choose the winner. We could see a great amount of creativity and initiative to contribute to the IGCA from the students. Many students stopped to watch and admire the sculptures, which were well-thought and based on out-of-the-box ideas. This activity turned out to give very surprising results and unique uses of these materials.
