TREE PLANTING
Tree planting was our first activity. We planted trees at the field of our school as we do every year. We invited other student, not only the IGCA, to join to this activity and it was delightful too see many of us enjoying and at the same time contributing to take care of our mother nature. Trees bring us life because it is the only supply of oxygen.
VISIT TO KIMBERLY CLARK RECYCLING PLANT
Another activity which was held in earth week was a visit to one of the biggest recycling plants in our country El Salvador. We all know Kimberly Clark which is one of the biggest company’s producers of hygiene products worldwide. During our visit we learnt what an environmentally friendly company they are.
We were kindly received in Kimberly Clark, and we were lucky to be part of a tour through the machines that are in charge of turning the paper we recycle to useful paper at toilets, kitchens and even books!
Here are some interesting facts we collected the day of the tour:
-All their products are 100% recycled. In the past the company imported recycled paper form the US, but then they asked the question "why do we bring paper from the US, if we can recycle here in El Salvador?". So this is how the company started their recycling campaign in El Salvador.
-The first step of the paper that they collect from recycling centers is the cleaning of it. There a big machine that takes 4 hours to take all of the staples, ink and other impurities that paper brings.
- Then the mixture of clean paper dissolved in water in pumped to a machine where it is processed to give the flat shape and is ironed to 800 °F. Then it is rolled by another machine controlled by computers.
- Every day the output is of 200 tons of paper.
-Every month the output if of 7000 tons of paper
-After the paper is rolled into giant rolls it is sent with trucks to the conversion centers in which other machines are given the rolls different uses like toilet paper and kitchen cleaning paper and then they are packed.
-The machines work every day 24 hours. And are stopped once a month for their upkeep.
Do you remember the three R's? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle? Well, Kimberly Clark explained us that they have four R's which are reduce, reuse, recycle and REFUSE. Refuse consists of refusing any product that can contaminate the environment. And we can all easily do this by purchasing any environmentally friendly product.
Our visit was very informative and motivated us to continue our labor as guardians of the environment.
GREEN T-SHIRT DAY
GREEN T-SHIRT DAY
On Friday we invited all the school to wear a green t-shirt as a symbol that we remember earth day. So it was fun to see all seniors go green!
EARTH DAY ASSEMBLY
And the last activity was an assembly held by the IGCA at our school auditorium. The assembly was the end of a week full of information about earth and all the information we learnt as a team was decided to put it together as an assembly.
In the assembly we had the presentation of all our activites and a video inspired by nature. The song of the video, although it is in Spanish, is very special because it talks about all the animal species that we are about to see no more in our world. So this video made us reflect about the importance to stop the destruction of our beautiful world.
We also had some guests which were some Kinder students which had the creative idea to make a fashion show with dresses and suits made from recycled materials. They creative designs made us reflect that there are no ages to start saving our planet.
